As small business owners, we need to protect our business from hackers. You can avoid trouble by taking some relatively simple steps.

Let’s get started:

Keep your software updated

Websites use Content Management Systems (CMS) and within the system are sections that need updating to ensure security measures are in place. Plugins and themes are especially vulnerable.

As you know, Google announced that HTTPS will now be a search ranking factor. Your site will be designated as “insecure” if you don’t have an SSL certificate.

In addition to having an SSL Certificate, you can also download security plugins that will help protect your website.

Below are two who are considered powerhouse plugins:

Wordfence Security. It’s free and includes antivirus scanning, cell phone sign-in (with two-factor authentication), malicious URL scanning and real-time views of your traffic.

IThemes Security (formerly Better WP Security). This is one of the most trusted plugins for WordPress and removes vulnerabilities and protect your site from hackers.

Other ways to keep your website secure:

Be careful when installing themes and plugins. Hackers find it very easy to attack a website through themes and plugins.

Before you install a new theme, make sure it’s from a trusted source. Premium themes are usually safe and most free themes are as well; however, be sure to do research before choosing.  WP Beginners has a ton of information on their site.

Never install a plugin that hasn’t been updated for more than 10 months. If you have an existing plugin that isn’t being updated,  look for an alternative.

Use strong passwords and keep them safe.

We all know that using strong passwords is crucial because hackers often attempt to crack or steal passwords. If you’re using the default password from WordPress, it’s a good idea to change it to something that isn’t easily broken.

Register with Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools)

None of us wants to get blacklisted by Google. Once you’re registered you can receive notifications regarding security issues such as hacking and malware infections.

Of course, an added benefit is access to features that help with your marketing since Google provides traffic stats for your site.

Your website is the lifeblood of your business and I hope you found this helpful in keeping it safe and secure.
